Los Alamos National Laboratory Fabrication Engineering Technologist 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Isotope Program (IP) within the Inorganic, Isotope, & Actinide Chemistry (C-IIAC) group is recognized worldwide for their research and development (R&D) and production of radionuclides for medical and industrial applications. Due to our expanding mission, we have been building a cutting-edge target fabrication site and laboratory, called "TarDIS" on the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) Mesa at TA53. This site employs modern fabrication equipment such as a computer numerical control (CNC) lathe and mill, laser welder, wire electrical discharge machining (EDM) and metal 3D printers. This site will be a focus of modern automation, robotics, and modularization (fabrication on demand). This position will include target fabrication work with traditional steel, aluminum, and plastics, as well as superalloys like Inconel, and exotic materials such as metallic rubidium, niobium, lanthanum, thorium and gallium.

As a member of this team, you will employ modern day alchemy on targets you have fabricated to transmute them using the LANSCE proton accelerator into vital radioisotopes for measurement and treatment of disease states, including cancer and heart disease. Therefore, your work will be touching and directly impacting real patients every day.

This position will be filled at the Engineering Technologist 1 or 2 level depending on skills and qualifications. Higher job levels will have additional responsibilities as detailed below.

Engineering Technologist 1 (ET1): $83,900 - $136,600

We are looking for an Engineering Technologist to contribute to the performance of our IP activities at LANSCE. The successful candidate will support R&D targetry development for the IPF (Isotope Production Facility) at the TarDIS target lab development facility and assist in research to develop production methods for novel isotopes. This will require the use of traditional and modern fabrication equipment as mentioned above and the use of computer-aided design (CAD) software and industrial control software within an engineering discipline. The successful candidate will be expected to use word processing software at a basic working level to prepare, review, and document technical information.

The selected candidate will also support target irradiation operations, perform troubleshooting, maintenance, and improvements of the IPF systems, participate in experimental development activities, and provide seasonal 24/7 off-hours and on-call support, in addition to helping plan and execute team activities. IP facilities at LANSCE include a Hot Cell designed to handle high dose rate materials, and this position will require radiological work. The ability to function as a member of a coordinated team is critical, as is a commitment to quality research, technical excellence, and professional integrity.

Within direction provided by the IPF Senior Scientist and Team Leader, the individual will monitor and report performance and attainment of technical deliverables.

Engineering Technologist 2 (ET2): $92,300 - $151,000

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will also perform additive manufacturing with 3Dprinters, and work with laser welders. You will participate in the design of experiments and infrastructure upgrades and work with IPF staff to fabricate, document, install, and test.

  • Applied knowledge of programming, setting up, and operating CNC mills, lathes, and wire EDM machines.

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings to develop machining processes

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver on milestones in a collaborative/hands-on, fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to learn safe and responsible handling of highly radioactive and hazardous materials, including the use of manipulators for remote handling in hot cells and respirator use.

  • A resume and a cover letter that directly addresses the minimum job requirements and desired qualifications must be attached to your application.

Additional Job Requirements for Level 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Advanced knowledge in the development of machining processes, including fixturing and tooling design and selection.
