Job Description

Job Title: Press Operator (Second)

Job Summary: The Press Operator (Second) assists Lead Press Operator in all aspects of operating press and acts as lead in their absence. Must be able to run the press independently and produce quality jobs.

*Duties and Responsibilities *

  • Obtain job information from prepress department and work orders.
  • Load plates into press, preset inks, and adjust registration.
  • Set all registration, adjust for proper timing and folding, set ink and balance color values.
  • During a print run, the press operator must monitor every aspect of the run, including web width and edge position, colors, registration, and print quality.
  • Document production issues, including material problems, down-time, and plate-related problems.
  • Clean up project, including helping to complete necessary paperwork and verifying accuracy.
  • Responsible for creating/updating inventory reports of pressroom supplies.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
  • Press maintenance and cleaning.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • High mechanical aptitude desired.

  • Detail oriented, committed, and willing to learn.

  • Must wear proper safety wear in pressroom including hearing protection.

  • Cold set web printing experience desired.

  • Must know all aspects of printing including but not limited to:

    • Ability to setup press for all types of printed product
    • Ability to recognize and correct press problems.
    • Ability to set and adjust ink and water balance.
    • Ability to set color to proof.
    • Ability to set register of four-color printing.
    • Ability to adjust web tensions.
    • Ability to set and adjust press rollers.
    • Ability to setup and adjust press folders.
    • Ability to read and comprehend press work orders.
    • Ability to work safely and understand safety procedures involved in operation of printing presses.
  • Make sure all papers are neat and bundling/counts are correct.

  • Keep quality at maximum and waste at minimum.

  • Ability to work with other members of a crew.

  • Must have ability to take written/and or verbal direction.

  • Forklift Certification/Experience a plus.

     

     

Working Condition

  • Pressroom -- high noise, moving machinery. Area is subject to varying temperatures. Concrete floors.
Physical Demand

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs & ladders, reach, kneel & stoop, and be able to lift 50lbs. Must have high visual acuity with excellent color perception with or without corrective lenses.
Work Schedule

  • Schedule hours are Monday through Thursday 5AM to Finish (+/- Noon) and Friday 1AM to Finish (+/- 8AM). Typically, 30-40 hours per week. Due to the nature of this position, hours will vary in order to accomplish the required tasks and may require coming in early, staying late, or (rarely) working weekends. It is critical that the person in this position be reliable/have reliable transportation.
